You've purchased a rabbit and got everything you need to get yourself started on a long and wonderful relationship with your rabbit, but what do you call them?
With so many to choose from out there, it is not easy. If you need something that is cute, popular, short, or long, how do you go about giving a name to your new rabbit?
Is Choosing a Name for Your Pet Rabbit Really That Hard?
For some people, it is. When you think about selecting the ideal name for a pet, there are a few things to consider. You are going to be calling them by this name for potentially the next decade, so you need to choose something that you will love further down the line, and this sense of timelessness may be difficult.
Another reason it can be troublesome is your rabbit is growing and changing. Naming them after a personality trait of theirs may not be suitable because they will change their habits.
How Do I Choose a Name for My Rabbit?
There are various sources of inspiration for naming a pet rabbit. You may want to name them after their fur, their colour, or their breed. You may also want to name them after a famous rabbit from literature or a movie like Hop or Peter (after Peter Rabbit).
But what makes a good rabbit name is your opinion, and your opinion only. But if you are struggling, you can always browse lists of pet names to inspire you. According to Pet Central, the top 10 rabbit names (and slight variations) are the following:
- Thumper
- Oreo
- Bun/Bun Bun/Bunn Bunn
- Coco/Cocoa/Co-co And Daisy/Daisy Mae/Daisy May
- Bunny/Bunnie
- Cinnabun/Cinna-bun/Cinnabunn/Cinnamon
- Snowball
- Baby, Bella, Bugs/Bugz/Buggs/Buggz/Bugsy/Bugzy, Marshmallow/Marshmellow and Lillie/Lilly/Lily
- Midnight
- Angel
But while a lot of these names are on the cute side, and distinctly American, what can you do to get more inspiration?
Getting Additional Inspiration
Using nature is a great start. You could go for weather, plants, metals, seasons, times of day, or planets to help. You could go for colours, food, or even ancient Greek or Roman names, and while choosing a name such as Aphrodite or Artemis is unusual, if you are looking for something a little different, this is hard to beat.
While you may spend a lot of time thinking about the ideal name for your pet rabbit you have to remember that whether you've given them a name you come to regret, whatever happens, a name always becomes them after a while. Someone you know whose name you may have considered odd originally you grow to accept.
The same thing will happen with your rabbit. Even if you decide you've made the wrong choice, that's not to say you don't have to stick with it. While choosing a name may seem difficult, in many ways, the name is the least important part. As long as you love and care for the animal, this is what really counts.
