History:
Schnauzers are thought to have originated from Germany, it's believed that they were bred from the Affenpinscher. The Mini Schnauzer first made an appearance in the show ring in 1899. They are sturdy dogs despite their size and are well adapted to town living. They were originally bred for ratting but today they make wonderful companion dogs.
Characteristics/Temperament:
Mini Schnauzers are tough, agile, smart and reliable little dogs. They can be quite headstrong and occasionally wary of strangers. Mini Schnauzers tend to think they are bigger than they actually are and have a bold, fearless temperament. Schnauzers come in three different sizes, Mini, Standard and Giant, the Miniature being the smallest of the three. Mini Schnauzers can be pepper and salt, black and silver or black in colour. They have a very distinctive appearance with their long eyebrows and beard.
Grooming:
Mini Schnauzers have a rough, wiry coat with a thick undercoat that needs regular grooming. They should be hand stripped to maintain the texture of the coarse coat, however some pet owners have their Mini Schnauzers clipped for convenience. They need to be brushed almost daily to prevent matting and keep their coat in good condition.
