The Stray Dog That Melted Our Hearts

The story of a stray dog that joined in an adventure race didn’t just take the internet by storm, it became world news. People around the world were touched by this wonderful story about a dog who refused to give up on his mission of finding a home.

While competing in a race through the Amazon in Ecuador a team of athletes came across a stray dog. The dog was shaggy and dirty and the team couldn’t resist giving him a meatball. After that he stuck with them and followed them for the duration of their gruelling race.

The captain of the team, Mikael Lindnord said, ‘when we set off we did it with some other teams, and I didn’t understand that Arthur was following us until we were alone and he was still there. At one stage we had to take a break and the dog was totally wrecked. We opened two cans of food and let him eat, because he could find no food at all in the jungle.’

The race this dog just happened to take part in wasn’t an easy one. The Adventure Racing World Championship takes place over 430 miles through a range of challenging terrains. Teams navigate through the course of the race through a combination of mountain biking, trekking, hiking and kayaking which takes them a few days to complete. It’s phenomenal that this dog was able to stay with them and endure the tougher parts of the race. He obviously formed a strong bond with the team and really wanted a home. The team tried to get rid of the dog on several occasions, not to be cruel but as it did not seem safe for the dog to continue. However, this was one stubborn dog.

They eventually got to a river where they were advised to leave the dog behind for safety reasons but he still wouldn’t give up, jumping into the water and swimming towards the team. So they grabbed the dog, pulled him into the boat and continued the journey with their new canine companion. They received a big cheer from the people standing by the water’s edge.

This amazing dog managed to keep up with the team and make it to the finish line. When they finished the race the team weren’t going to let their best friend go. He needed veterinary treatment so they set up a fundraising account to get him the treatment he needed and fly him back to their home in Sweden. Thankfully this story has a happy ending and the dog got adopted by one of the members of the team and now has a loving home.
