The Oldest Cat in The World

Pet Image

Domestic cats live an average of 15 years. But you could get lucky with your furry friend and enjoy many more years together. Some cats defy the odds and enjoy incredibly long lives. Of course, not every potential record breaker comes to the attention of the media. It is impossible to know who has proved to be the oldest cat ever, but several extremely aged cats have made the headlines.

The Record Breakers

Naturally a cat’s age must be proved if it is to be recorded as a record breaker. Owners need to provide compelling evidence of their pet’s date of birth. This can include veterinary records and adoption records but must be supported by photographic evidence. As far as Guinness World Records are concerned, the oldest ever cat was Creme Puff of Austin, Texas. This rather portly cat was born in August 1967 and died in August 2005. His truly heroic age of 38 years is going to be hard to beat.

Creme Puff’s owner also had another cat which he claimed had died aged 34 years but this could not be verified.

Corduroy and Scooter

The oldest cat currently alive, according to Guinness World Records, is Corduroy who is 26 years old and resides in Oregon. Corduroy lost his status as the world’s oldest cat in May this year only to get it back again almost immediately. A Siamese from Texas named Scooter was verified as having reached the age of thirty but the cat died shortly after the record was confirmed leaving Corduroy to reign supreme once more.

But Corduroy cannot rest on his laurels because there is now a pretender to his crown. Henry is a rescue cat from Norwich. He is thought to be 30 years old but there are problems with verifying this. His owner, Sally Brown, has launched a campaign to get the ginger cat into the record books. Sally is a former veterinary nurse who has taken in many cats over the years. She currently has 15 felines and many of her charges have reached incredible ages. Two of them are currently aged 19 and 24. Another of Sally’s cats, Montague is 18 and was the star of TV adverts for Iams cat food in the 1990s.

Henry was a comparatively youthful 10 when he was rescued by Sally Brown. Now she needs photographic evidence of his age and confirmation from a vet so that he can be declared the oldest cat in the world. She claims that her cats’ longevity is due to a healthy diet and lot of affection. Creme Puff, on the other hand, was fed a diet of bacon and eggs and asparagus, topped off with coffee and cream. Go figure!

The Oldest Pets

Your cat could live considerably longer than you might expect but there are pets which could be with you for much longer. Goldie the goldfish, who was won at a fair in 1960, lived to the ripe old age of 45. Many parrots live into their 60s and 70s and the oldest recorded horse was 62. However, the oldest animal ever recorded was Adwaita, an Aldabra tortoise who died in 2006 at the age of 255! The oldest animal alive today is also a tortoise. Jonathan is a Seychelles giant tortoise and is currently 183 years old.
