The Canine Carnival

Known as the greatest party on earth, the Rio Carnival is a fabulous fiesta of colour and sound. In the run up to the main event, hundreds of street parties are held across the city in what seems like an endless stream of revelry and glitz. One of these events is the Blocao pet parade which sees pampered pooches vamping it up for Mardi Gras.

At the Copacabana

This amazing animal parade boasts the fabulous setting of Copacabana beach and rivals the human events for the extravagance of its fabulous costumes. This year more than 100 dogs strutted their stuff dressed in a colourful array of costumes celebrating everything from superheroes to ladybirds. The festival was attended by a brass band and a singer who kicked of the event with a performance of Rio’s anthem Cidade Maravilhose which means "marvellous city".

Dazzling Doggies and Fabulous Felines

Pet owners seemed delighted to take to the beach with their furry friends and the canine capers were an incredible sight. Onlookers were dazzled by the sea of sequins, feathers and ruffles as the pretty pooches passed by. A couple of brave cat owners even joined in with their moggies.

Doggie Stars

Every imaginable breed was on show including golden retrievers, pugs and a bichon frisé in a rather fetching Wonder Women costume! Pretty in pink and striking in scarlet, the doggy stars outshone their owners in their wonderful and original outfits.

Elaborate Costumes

Many of the costumes were impressively elaborate including a fabulous bumble bee outfit sported by a diminutive mongrel and the matching clown costumes worn by French bull dogs Gucci and Victoria. These dogs hit the headlines last year when it came to light that their owner Ninna Mandin’s fiancée had abused them. She promptly broke off her engagement to protect her pooches.

Proud Pooches

The canine party-goers strutted their stuff on the event’s catwalk, or should that be dogwalk? Both humans and dogs seemed to having a wonderful time and the colourful party provided a distraction from the continuing protests in the wake of the Olympics and football World Cup. On this day at least, the locals appeared to have forgotten about all the controversy and just wanted to party in style with their pets.
