Responsible Dog Owner - How To Be One
Are You Responsible Enough To Have A Dog?
Pretty much anyone can get their hands on a dog these days. There is no test you have to pass to prove you are capable of looking after a dog. It’s only if you get caught not treating your dog well that they get taken off you.
People have to decide on their own whether or not they are responsible to own a dog, and unfortunately a lot of people make the wrong decision. The last thing you want to do is neglect a dog because you don’t have the means to look after them properly. Here are things you need to think about in order to determine if you are able to take on a dog.
Do you have the time?
Dogs take up a lot of time. If you are really busy, then it’s probably not a good idea to get a dog. They are demanding and time consuming and require constant attention. Really think about how much time you can set aside to care for your dog.
Do you have the space?
There is no point getting a dog if you don’t have the space. You not only need a large enough house or flat but also a secure garden. Your dog will need somewhere where they can play and exercise.
Will you be around enough?
If you travel a lot or don’t spend much time at home then it isn’t fair to get a dog. Also, if you work really long hours your dog will be on their own for too long. You need to make sure you are around enough so that you can look after your dog and give them the love and attention they need.
Will you train your dog properly?
It takes quite a lot of time and dedication to properly train a dog. Do you think you are dedicated enough to constantly work on training your dog? You should not get a dog if you don’t intend on training it properly.
Can you afford to cater for their needs?
Lastly, you need to consider whether you can afford all the costs that come with owning a dog. For example, vet bills, pet insurance, dog food, dog equipment, grooming products and vaccinations.
