Healthy Hamster Treats
Like a lot of small animals, hamsters want to eat anything you put in front of them. However due to their delicate digestive systems it is vital that you are selective on what you feed them. This particularly applies where treats are concerned.
Hamsters love sweet pet foods and nuts, but a large proportion of their diet should be protein based. Ensure treats do not replace any of their meals, as too many sweet treats can upset your hamsters stomach and result in diarrhoea. Diarrhoea can be extremely harmful and potentially fatal for a hamster so it is critical treats are controlled.
Fruit based treats are the best pet food. Critters and Supreme do a good variety of fruit based small animal treats based around blueberries, cranberries, apples and bananas. Hamsters also like milk and this is full of essential nutrients for them. However as most hamster owners know, a milk bowl can be messy and the hamster can knock it over or step in it. As an alternative, use cheese chews or snacks such as Ancols as these will provide the ingredients they need without the mess.
Always be aware that hamsters will often hide treats, so monitor how many they are eating. It is recommended they receive no more than two or three treat drops a week to avoid digestive problems and obesity.
