Getting a puppy for the first time

When you buy a puppy there are a few things that you need to purchase before bringing your new dog home.

It is always worthwhile going around your home and moving items which you don't want to get chewed or damaged whilst your puppy is still small. Puppies are renowned for chewing and eating anything in sight so it is advisable to put valuable items out of reach.

You will also need to decide on a space in your home for the puppy to sleep. Getting your puppy in a regular bedtime routine is always best, starting from an early age. It is generally not a good idea to have them sleep in the same room as you. Normally most puppies and dogs sleep in the kitchen or utility room. Giving your dog its own personal space from an early age gives them a space where they can go and not be disturbed if they have had enough.

Most people use a cardboard box as a bed as it is likely to be chewed in the first few months. After they have stopped this chewing habit, you will need to invest in a good dog bed or basket for them. Consider the size that your dog might grow to in the future and whether the room that they sleep in is warm or cold. You don't want your pet to be too cold at night.
