Essential Equipment For First Time Horse Owners



If you haven’t owned a horse before then you might be surprised by the amount of essential equipment you need. You will need to get some important safety and maintenance equipment before you even think about getting a horse. Here are some of the things you need to stock up on if you are new to horse riding and want to get a horse.

Saddle

This provides support for the horses back and comfort for rider.

Bridle

A bridle is used to direct a horse.

Reins

Reins are attached to a bridle, which you use to direct a horse.

Collar

A collar is a non-riding bridle with no 'bit' that goes in the mouth.  It’s used for bringing the horse in and letting it out in the field. It is also used for tying the horse up, feeding, grooming and riding prep.

Lead Rope

A lead rope is used with collar or reins as a guide rope.

Body Armour

Body armour is very important as it provides rider with body protection. Do not ride a horse without this.

Riding Hat

You must wear a riding hat to protect your head in case of a fall or accident with the horse. This is an essential piece of safety equipment.

Stirrups

Stirrups hold the riders foot and they are attached to saddle by a strap.  They significantly increase the riders ability to stay in the saddle and enable riders to easily mount the horse.

Boots

Classic boots should come high enough up the leg to prevent the leathers of the  from pinching the leg of the rider. They also have a sturdy toe to protect the rider's foot when on the ground, and a distinct heel to prevent the foot from sliding through the . Modern boots are now just above ankle.

Jodhpurs

Jodhpurs are very important as they stop your legs rubbing and help to provide a comfortable ride. Never wear jeans as the inside seam will cause bad rubbing. Jodhpurs are also very flexible which is perfect for horse riding.

Grooming Kit 

Hoof pick are used to remove mud, manure, and rocks from the sole of the hoof.  They are best used from heel to toe so as to avoid picking at the 'frog' of the hoof.  Hoof picks are important for preventing lameness in a horse.

Body Brush, Mane And Tail Brush

These are all used as basic grooming equipment to keep the horses coat clean and tidy.
