Different Types of Dog Food - Dry or Wet?

There are lots of different types of food to choose from when it comes to feeding your dog. Dogs have evolved the ability to consume and digest many different foods, but they still need to have the right balance of carbohydrate, protein, fat, vitamins and minerals to keep them healthy.

There are lots of different opinions on what the best type of food is, but at the end of the day it really does depend on you and your dog. You need to choose a type of food that keeps your dog happy and healthy, as well as being convenient for you. Here are the main types of food you can feed your dog.

Wet Food

comes in cans or pouches and is sold in most supermarkets and pet stores. The main advantage of wet food is that dogs really love the taste of it, and it also comes readymade. Wet food is much more palatable for dogs and they will often self select it over dry dog food. If you do buy wet food then you should be aware that most wet dog foods are made of up to 80% moisture (water). This means you get less for your money and it often works out more expensive. Wet food can also contain higher levels of animal derivatives.

Dry Food

Dr food is a combination of meat, cereals and vegetables that have been cooked and then dried to form small pellets of food. You will get more for your money with dry food and it isn’t as messy as wet Dog Food. Some dry food isn’t as appealing to dogs as wet food but it can be more nutritious for them. If you want to make sure your dog is getting the right balance of vitamins and minerals then choose brands that offer ‘complete’ dog food. Complete dog foods contain all the ingredients your dog needs to stay healthy.

There are lots of different types of dry foods on offer and they vary quite a lot in price. The more expensive brands will contain a higher percentage of protein. Cheaper brands will be filled with cereals and the main ingredient will be maize, rice or wheat rather than protein. These ingredients will make your dog feel fuller to start with, but it will not give prolonged feeling of fullness.

Combination Diets

Combination diets are where you mix dry and wet dog food or combine either with home cooked food. This gives your dog a bit more variety and they will get used to have different types of food with different tastes and textures. However, if you are combining a range of different foods it is difficult to know whether you are getting the balance right. It can lead to overfeeding and you really need to make sure your dog is getting the right nutrients. Combination diets can be quite convenient and less expensive.
