Different Small Animals You Can Have As Pets

Are you thinking of getting a small animal as a pet? If the responsibility of a dog or cat is too much then getting a small animal is probably a better option. Small animals still require a great deal of care and need to be looked after properly. As there are quite a few animals you can get as pets it can sometimes be a bit difficult to choose the best one for you and your family. Here are some of the small animals you can get and the care and attention they need:


Rabbits are very popular pets in the UK, there are an estimated 1.7 million rabbits kept as pets. It’s quite difficult to resist a cute fluffy bunny. Rabbits can live between 8 and 12 years and come in many different colours and sizes. Rabbits need the following things:

  • At least 3 or 4 hours of exercise a day
  • A large shelter such as a hutch
  • An exercise pen
  • Fresh drinking water
  • Hay and grass
  • Toys to play with
  • Things to gnaw on
  • Leafy greens


Hamsters are another great choice for a small pet, they are the popular rodents that people choose to have as pets. The most common type of hamster is the Syrian hamster. If you are going to keep get a hamster then it’s probably best to just get one as they can fight. Here are some of the basic things hamsters need:

  • A tall, wide wire cage
  • Dust extracted bedding
  • Products to gnaw on
  • Fresh fruit and vegetables
  • Fresh drinking water
  • Comfortable, draft free, dry living space

Guinea Pig

Guinea pigs can make lovely pets if looked after properly. They are very friendly with people if they have been handled from a young age. They normally live between 5 and 6 years. You can keep guinea pigs together as they usually enjoy each others company. Guinea pigs need things such as:

  • A large living space
  • Somewhere to run around and exercise
  • Hay and grass
  • Greens
  • Fresh water
  • Places to hide
  • Bedding


Ferrets are charming little creatures that can make wonderful pets if cared for properly. They are very playful and like to investigate everything. If they are taught from a young age to be comfortable around people then they are generally very friendly. Ferrets usually live up to 6 years of age but if they are looked after well they can sometimes live longer. Ferrets need:

  • A large, well ventilated living space
  • A sleeping area
  • Somewhere to go to the toilet
  • Exercise daily
  • Toys and things to interact with
  • Fresh water


Chinchillas are known for their extremely soft, beautiful fur. Before considering a Chinchilla you should know they can live longer than most small animals. Some Chinchillas live up to 15 years, so they are a big commitment. However, they are fairly quiet and low maintenance pets. Some of their requirements include:

  • Enclosed bed
  • Large housing
  • Suitable bedding
  • Plenty of exercise
  • A dust bath
  • Hay
  • Things to chew on
  • Fresh water


Although rats don’t appeal to everyone, they actually make lovely pets. It surprises a lot of people that rats are actually very clean and extremely clever little animals. Rats don’t like to be on their own so it’s normally best to get more than one, but get the same sex rats otherwise you will end up with babies. Here are some of the things that rats require:

  • Large wire cage
  • Bedding
  • Nest/sleeping box
  • Fresh water
  • Daily exercise outside their cage
  • Places to hide in their cage
