Mountain Dog Breeds

Mountain Dog Breeds

Whether it’s for search and rescue or the ability to withstand colder temperatures, mountain dogs are a popular breed choice if you live in colder climates. Mountain dogs aren’t your regular stay-at-home dog. These big and bulky breeds require a lot of exercise, they have thick coats to brave cold weather and are talented at search and rescue. If you’re looking for a large dog and have space and time to look after them, you might be interested in adding a mountain dog to your family. Here are the most popular mountain dog breeds today.

St. Bernard

St. Bernard dogs are popular for being good with children. These large canines were originally found in monasteries and assisted people travelling through the snowy Alps. Today, they can be found in typical homes. They sleep a lot and are generally quite laid-back, but they love short walks especially when it’s not too hot.

Great Pyrenees

Originally bred as guardian dogs to defend flocks of livestock, these big and fluffy dogs are a joy to have in the home. They don’t require as much energy as other breeds on this list, but they’re still incredibly playful and loud at times. They do shed a lot so it’s important to groom them on a regular basis.

Entlebucher Mountain Dog

The Entlebucher Mountain Dog is a breed that demands a lot of exercise. In fact, it’s recommended that they get at least an hour of workout every day. This includes running, swimming or even an agility course where they can stimulate their muscles. They also require some mental stimulation such as training, puzzle toys or even just walking and soaking in the sights.
