If you love animals and want to do something fun this summer there are plenty of things to choose from. Instead of staying inside and getting bored, get out in the fresh air and try one of our 8 fun summer activities that involve animals.

Summer is the perfect time to see lots of animals, as the temperature is warmer days out become much more enjoyable. Here are 8 fun summer activities that involve animals that all the family can take part in.


  • Go to the farm


Trips to the farm are so much fun in the summer months. Spring is the best time to go because it’s lambing season. However, you can still see lots of farm animals in the summer month. From sheep, pigs and cows to rabbits and turkeys. Many farms have a wide range of different animals you can see and maybe even feed.


  • Go to the zoo


If you want to see slightly more exotic animals then head to a UK zoo such as Marwell Zoological Park or London Zoo. You can spend the day wandering round the zoo and see animals such as penguins, gorillas, lions and tigers.


  • See an outdoor dog show


There are plenty of outdoor dog shows held throughout the UK in the summer. You don’t even need to go to a specific dog show, most local village fayres will have a small dog show. It’s a fun day out for all the family, especially if you have kids who love dogs.


  • Go on a nature trail


Head out on a nature trail and you are bound to spot some animals. In woodland you might come across squirrels, deer, birds and lots of creepy crawlies. There are lots of nature trails and lovely walks at National Trust sites across the UK to explore in the summer.


  • Horseriding


Why not book some horse riding lessons during the summer months. Or take your family out for a day of horse riding at a local riding school.


  • Visit an animal rescue shelter


If you are thinking of adopting a new pet then spend some time at an animal rescue shelter. You could even do some volunteering and help out with the animals or offer to walk some of the dogs.


  • Go on a group dog walk


Some dog rescue shelters and local communities will organise group dog walks. It’s a great chance to get out and about and meet lots of other dog owners. Or simply go out on some dog walks at beautiful locations throughout the UK, from the Peak District to the New Forest, there are plenty of country walks to enjoy.


  • Visit a deer park


There are a few parks dotted around the UK where you can walk amongst herds of deer. For example, Bushy Park, Woburn Abbey Deer Park and Windsor Great Park
