4 Healthy Doggy Diet Dinners
When it comes to living a healthy lifestyle, your dog’s diet plays an important role.
The right nutrients are the building blocks for a healthy canine diet. However, with so many brands and products on the market, it’s sometime difficult to know what exactly to feed your dog.
Whilst puppies require a different feeding regime initially, compared to adult dogs, it’s still important to make sure they eat well from a young age. This will aid their development and help to avoid obesity issues in later life.

Sweet potato sardines
This meal is really simple to make and if you prepare a large portion you will have enough to last throughout the week when feeding time arrives.
- 2 sweet potatoes
- 1 cup of frozen spinach, defrosted
- 1/3 cup of flaxseed meal
- 2 cans of tinned sardines (water packed, drained)
To prepare, boil the sweet potatoes for around 15-20 minutes. Let them cool down before adding to a bowl with all of the other ingredients.
Mix the ingredients together with a potato masher or a large fork and ensure that you break down the sardines and lumps of potato. Once you’ve mashed it all together, you’re done! Simply dish out your dog’s dinner and cover and refrigerate between each serving.
Whilst a lamb stew is a sumptuous and delicious treat for humans, it’s not bad for dogs either. So why not make a lamb stew for both of you – here’s what you need for the culinary canine version.
- 1 pound of lamb neck and shoulder pieces
- 2 cups of cooked brown rice
- 1 sweet potato (peeled, diced)
- 6 cups of water
- 3 carrots, diced
First of all, place the lamb and 6 cups of water in a saucepan and simmer for 20 minutes. Then, take the lamb out of the pan and allow it to cool, before removing the meat from the bone.
Next, place the boneless lamb back in the pan along with your remaining ingredients. Return to a simmer and cook the vegetables for around 15 minutes until they are tender. Allow the food to cool, before mashing the ingredients together and serving.
After the first serving has been dished out, you can freeze portions and defrost them as and when needed.
Turkey and veg
Perfect for giving your dog the protein, minerals, and vitamins they need, turkey and veg is another healthy dinner worth making.
If your dog is set to lose a few pounds, turkey is ideal as it contains less fat than other meats, such as beef.
- 1 pound of ground turkey
- 4 cups of water
- 2 cups of brown rice
- 1 cup of carrots, chopped
- 1 cup of green beans, chopped
To start, cook the ground turkey in a non-stick skillet until it’s cooked right through. Remember to avoid using heavy oil to brown the turkey as the fat content could potentially upset your dog’s stomach.
Next, add the brown rice, turkey and the water to a large pot and bring to the boil. Decrease the heat to medium-low and cook for an extra 15 minutes until the rice is soft and tender. Add your carrots and green beans, cook for another ten minutes and then allow the meal to cool before serving.
If your pup prefers chicken over turkey or lamb then this recipe offers a good source of protein alongside plenty of veg to mix up the flavours.
- 4 chicken breasts
- ½ a cup of carrots, chopped
- ½ a cup of green beans, chopped
- ½ a cup of broccoli, chopped
- ½ cup of rolled oats
- 4 cups of low-salt chicken broth
Firstly, use a knife to remove the excess fat from the chicken and cut the breasts into small, manageable sized chunks.
Cook the chicken in a non-stick skillet on a medium heat and ensure that it’s not pink when complete. If it is, then remember to cook it for longer until it’s white all the way through.
Next, place the chicken, vegetables, oats, and broth in a big pot and cook on a medium heat for roughly 15 minutes. Once cooked, allow it to cool down before serving.
When stored in the fridge, leftover portions can be used for up to five days.
