Choosing the best dog muzzle for your pooch

Dog muzzles are used for several different reasons. Often, they are used for dogs that are aggressive or nervous, but they are also used to prevent dogs from eating things when out on walks, and as a safe, preventative measure. There are certain situations where a muzzle might be needed for dogs who aren’t usually aggressive. For example, situations some dogs find stressful such as going to the vet or being groomed. Dog owners that use muzzles are being responsible and keeping both their dog and others safe.

Muzzles can also be used to help social dogs who have issues with other dogs, and eventually if their behaviour improves and they are interacting nicely, the muzzle can be removed.

If you are unsure whether your dog needs to wear a muzzle, talk to a canine behaviourist or your vet. Don’t force a muzzle on your dog, if it’s safe to do so, try and get them used to wearing it gradually using treats and rewards.
